September 21-23 , 2008: Conference
"What Is at Stake in the Ethnography of Human Experience: Phenomenological and Psychoanalytic Perspectives"
Sponsored by the Society for Psychological Anthropology, the Provost's Conference Subvention Fund, and Various Emory Programs
About the Psychoanalytic Studies Program
Emory University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers a minor in psychoanalytic studies through the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts (ILA). The ILA's psychoanalytic Studies Program (PSP) deals with the theory, application, and history of psychoanalytic thought and practice. It is not a clinical training program.
Designed to give
students a thorough knowledge of
psychoanalysis across a range of disciplines,
the minor requires participation in a bi-weekly series of informal talks
by faculty and students, attendance at a monthly colloquia provided by
faculty and psychoanalysts, completion of a four-course curriculum, and
preparation of a substantial paper of publishable quality.
The program draws faculty from Emory College, the Law School, the Business School, the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine, and the Candler School of Theology. In addition, faculty affiliated with the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute, the Atlanta Foundation for Psychoanalysis, and the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society participate in the program, linking the academy with the psychiatric and psychoanalytic communities. Some psychoanalytic studies program courses enroll both analytic candidates and graduate students, fostering a rare opportunity for dialogue between traditionally disparate worlds. For example, the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute's Extension Course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, a 10-session course taught by the Institute's faculty, is available to graduate students.
PSP students are provided a great deal of flexibility in designing courses of study to suit their unique needs and interests. Because psychoanalytic thought is not bound to one discipline, students are encouraged to cross disciplinary and intellectual boundaries. The program aims students in locating and enrolling in suitable courses across the university.
The
PSP also co-sponsors:
Movie Mania, with the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society, the Emory University
Psychoanalytic Institute, and the ILA. A monthly film series during the
academic year, Movie Mania features a film screening followed by a presentation
by a psycho-analyst and general discussion.
The H. Lee Hall Memorial lecture, with the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society. Speakers have included Dr's. Ethel Person, Phyllis Tyson, Robert Michels, Roy Schafer, Otto Kernberg, and other distinguished analysts.
Students from any
department within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may be awarded
the minor in Psychoanalytic Studies upon fulfilling the following requirements.
Coursework
and participation
The seminar, "Introduction to Psychoanalytic Studies," required
of all psychoanalytic studies students, is offered every three semesters.
Three additional four-semester-hour course electives must be completed.
Each semester the PSP will make available a list of courses across the
curriculum that will count toward the minor.
Each student is also required to participate in the brown-bag and colloquium series. Participation includes regular attendance at both series and at least one brown-bag presentation. Brown-bags meet monthly on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 11:30-1:00. For a schedule of brown-bag presentations and colloquia speakers, see the PSP calendar.
For more information on the courses being offered, see the Courses section of this website.
Writing
Requirement
Students are required to submit a paper of length and quality appropriate
for a publishable journal article to a three-person committee chosen from
among PSP affiliated faculty. The paper may be a revision or an outgrowth
of a research paper prepared during coursework.
Exams
A section of Psychoanalytic Studies should be included in departmental
doctoral examinations.

"Words are the physicians of a mind diseased."
Aeschylus
"One might compare the relation of the ego to the id with that between a rider and his horse."
"The horse provides the locomotor energy, and the rider has the prerogative of determining the goal and of guiding the movements of his powerful mount towards it. But all too often in the relations between the ego and the id we find a picture of the less ideal situation in which the rider is obliged to guide his horse in the direction in which it itself wants to go."
Sigmund Freud
"As is known, it is in the realm of experience inaugurated by psychoanalysis that we may grasp along what imaginary lines the human organism, in the most intimate recesses of its being, manifests its capture in a symbolic dimension."
Jacques Lacan
